While visiting an adivasi family in rural Maharashtra during a social work class, we wandered upon an owl caught in a bat trap. One of our guides tried to get the owl out and wanted to take it to the vet, but the family insisted that they keep the owl and they were very happy with the accidental catch, as they saw the owl as an omen of luck. We were very torn about the incident as it was sad to see this owl suffering, but also the family was very poor and the owl was probably sold to provide income. It's a difficult ethical dilemma. It's easy for relatively wealthy Westerners, like myself, to say that what they're doing is wrong, but am I valuing a bird more than people? For poaching and illegal sales to end, I think that the people who are willing to pay big money for these owls in order to indulge their beliefs are the ones who need to be the focus of change efforts. It has to be an educational mission combined with stiff penalties for the purchase of these animals. Also, the poor rural families who are catching these animals need more sustainable economic options.
